History

The wilderness coast has a rich history which can add a lot of interest to any visit to the area. For this reason our guidebook has information on the many shipwrecks which have occurred along the wilderness coast and the lighthouses which were built in response to these disasters. Also included is a brief history of white settlement of this part of Australia together with the origin of local place names and what happened to the areas original inhabitants.

GEOMORPHOLOGY. The landforms of the wilderness coast are as bewildering as they are impressive. Visiting the giant dunes near Cape Howe or Thurra River for example raises inevitable questions like how come and why. We have provided Geomorphological information in the guidebook to help answer these questions. We hope it will add to visitor understanding and enjoyment of the area.
